Australian Synchrotron Signs with XIA to be First FalconX Beta Customer

On Monday 26 March, the Australian Synchrotron became the first Beta customer for XIA’s FalconX digital pulse processor Powered By SITORO® Accelerated Analysis. The FalconX instrument will be installed on the X-ray Fluorescence Microprobe beamline, where it will help researchers conduct experiments with unprecedented speed and accuracy.

Synchrotron beamlines are expensive to run and beamtime is in high demand. SITORO Accelerated Analysis will dramatically cut analysis time, allowing more experiments to be performed and increasing the cost-effectiveness of the beamlines upon which the FalconX instrument is installed.

Peter Grudberg, President of XIA, said “with Southern Innovation’s technology, [synchrotrons] are able to simultaneously achieve very high counting rates, while maintaining very good resolution – pile-up is processed rather than discarded. This could be a game changer in the industry; the advanced analysis techniques used by Southern Innovation can take over the market…”

Discussing the addition of FalconX to the Australian Synchrotron’s capabilities, Dr David Paterson, Principal X-ray Fluorescence Beamline Scientist, said “…this expanded capability will be available to beamline users in 2013. Alongside the capabilities of the Maia detector, our beamlines will have a first-of-its kind offering. This will help further the research mission of the Australian Synchrotron and serve as a model for similar facilities worldwide.”

The Australian Synchrotron is one of Australia’s premier research facilities and is in fact the largest stand-alone piece of scientific infrastructure in the southern hemisphere. Their purchase of the FalconX digital pulse processor is testament to the potential of SITORO technology to revolutionise analytical radiation detection and measurement worldwide.

Researchers at the Australian Synchrotron led by Dr David Paterson and Dr Martin de Jonge used X-ray fluorescence microprobe results, which relied on SITORO® Accelerated Analysis, to create a 3D reconstruction of the distribution of trace elements in an ant mandible.
