Southern Innovation Wins Australian Technologies Award

Southern Innovation Wins Australian Technologies Award

Southern Innovation has won the prestigious Mining Technologies Award and the coveted People’s Choice Award in the 2015 Australian Technologies Competition.

The awards recognise ‘ground-breakers, risk-takers, challenge-seekers and game changers’. Judges look for innovators able to bring significant benefits to industry, combined with the business skills to realise their global commercial potential.

‘We are delighted to be recognised for our latest technology,’ said Southern Innovation Managing Director David Scoullar. ‘This is further proof of the global mining industry’s thirst for new technologies that enhance efficiency.’

The Australian Technologies Competition, now in its fifth year, receives hundreds of applicants each year for its eight month development program which culminates in recognising Australia’s best game-changing technology companies. Four Semi-finalists made it through to the final round in the Mining Technologies category: Southern Innovation, Corky’s Sustainable Energy, FluidIntel and Pacific Environment. At the finals in Sydney on 20 October, competitors battled it out in a live pitch before judges and an audience.

Operations Manager Laura Grundy presented the business plan for Southern Innovation’s GradeScan™ bulk ore scanning and sorting technology. The technology will put real-time, actionable data in the hands of miners, dramatically improving efficiency, productivity and environmental sustainability.

GradeScan™ implements Southern Innovation’s ground-breaking SITORO digital signal processing technology to accurately and quickly scan large volumes of ore on a conveyor. GradeScan™ will allow waste or contaminated fractions to be identified and removed before transporting, processing and selling the ore. GradeScan™ will be the world’s first ore scanning and sorting system capable of operating at the speed, volume and accuracy required by the world’s largest mining operations, including coal, iron ore and potash.

The Mining Technologies Award was presented by Christine Gibbs Stewart, CEO of sponsor Austmine, the peak industry body in Australia for the mining equipment, technology and services (METS) sector.

Southern Innovation also won the People’s Choice award, competing against entries from all five industry categories with interests as varied as smart grids, building automation and unmanned drone ocean monitoring.
