Bulk Ore Analysis to be Available Faster with $1M Acceleration Grant

The Department of Industry, Innovation and Science has today announced that Southern Innovation’s revolutionary GradeScan™ technology will receive $1 million under the prestigious Accelerating Commercialisation grant program.

‘We are thrilled to receive this highly competitive grant and excited to put it to use in accelerating the introduction of a novel and valuable Australian-manufactured technology to the global mining industry,’ said David Scoullar, CEO of Southern Innovation. ‘The award recognises GradeScan’s unique ability to dramatically reduce costs and environmental impacts across a range of mining operations.’

Enabled by Southern Innovation’s patented SITORO® digital signal processing technology and supported by global industry participants, GradeScan will analyse a range of high volume bulk-ore on conveyor belts in real-time at rates of up to 3,000 tonnes/hour. It will dramatically enhance miners’ ability to optimise existing operations and selectively process resource-rich ore, improving productivity and profitability while reducing consumption of energy, water, chemicals and equipment parts.

Current in-line ore-scanning technologies have relatively slow analysis times meaning mining operations have had no choice but to crush and process large volumes of ore of uncertain grade. This approach negatively impacts: capital efficiency; processing costs, wear and tear on equipment, energy and water consumption, resource planning and waste disposal.

SITORO technology overcomes limitations inherent in traditional radiation-based analysis techniques by more quickly and accurately processing signals from detectors, allowing for much larger data flows and faster decision making.

The Accelerating Commercialisation grant recognises the significant benefits that GradeScan offers the global mining industry, and its readiness for market. Southern Innovation has been awarded the maximum grant amount of
$1 million towards the project which has a budget in excess of $2 million. SITORO digital signal processing is already in use in a variety of applications, including freight and logistics screening, materials analysis and non-destructive testing.
